Abstract
Rat inferior alveolar nerves were indentified and perfused with glycerol, ethanol, streptomycin/lidocaine mixture and normal saline, using 4 rats in each group. One hour after the operation, electromyograthic recordings were done at the anterior
belly
of digastric muscle with stimulation of the 1st molar tooth.
@ES The following results were found.
@EN 1. The threshold intensities to evoke digastric EMG in the streptomycin/lidocaine and saline groups were not significantly different form the control group.
2. The threshold intensity of ethanol group was 5 to 12 times higher, and that of glycerol group was 2 to 2.5 times higher than the control group.
3. There were much individual variations in each experimental animal.
4. Amplitude of digastric EMG was increased following the increase of stimulating intensity. Relationship between amplitude and intensity was linear when the intensity was transformed to the square root.
5. It was suggested that the statistical value of amplitude divided by the square root of the stimulating intensity is representative of the effect of the treated agents.
6. In the group of ethanol, the estatistical value of A/sqI was significantly lower than the control group. In the glycerol group, A/sqI value was lower than the control group but not significant statistically.
